Gallikos River

The River that "has gifts", Ehedoros or Gallikos River originates from the mountain Kroussia (Mount Dysoro) and it flows southbound to Thermaikos gulf near Kalohori. This is one of the largest rivers of Central Macedonia. His name Cheidoros or Ehedoros ( Cheidoron: the one that has gifts), is due to the presence of alluvial gold in between the volume of its debris. Already attested by Herodotus, that Alexander the First supported his economic power from the mines near Mount Dysoro (Kroussia). Analyses of samples of gold objects found in excavations proved that the ancient people systematically exploited the auriferous deposits of the River Gallikos.
